Frequently Asked Questions About the Updated Corporate Design

Here we answer the most important questions regarding the development and implementation of the revised corporate design of Ruhr University Bochum (RUB).

The previous design no longer adequately met the requirements for accessibility and inclusion. The redesign of the corporate identity is a necessary investment that also provides support in areas such as the increasing competition for funding and talent, declining student enrollment, and modern crisis communication. A competitive design—one that works particularly well online and is up to date with international standards—is becoming increasingly important for appealing to young target audiences.

A design overhaul incurs costs. However, these costs arise even if the design is not updated—outdated materials and templates make implementing the design unnecessarily time-consuming. Fifteen years ago, technological development was not as advanced as it is today, which is why the current design is not ideally suited for many modern use cases. Without clear guidelines, users often have to spend a lot of time and energy making design adjustments.

From a long-term perspective, investing in a design overhaul will help reduce costs. Optimized administrative processes—particularly in the digital realm—can make numerous workflows more efficient. For example, forms or digital tools such as apps could be created more quickly and easily.

We are rolling out the updated visual identity in phases. Existing materials featuring the previous design may continue to be used until they are depleted or need to be updated anyway. Effective immediately, we will design new materials using the revised corporate design. This allows us to use existing resources sustainably and ensures a smooth transition. The design update is scheduled to be fully implemented by the end of 2028.
